The Minecraft movie officially came out today (April 4, 2025). Has anyone watched it? What are your thoughts?
I personally did watch it today. I actually really liked it, which I did NOT think I would be saying. The movie has been ridiculed like crazy and all of the phrases from the trailer made it seem like it was going to be so out of touch. However, this was not the case at all. There were a lot of things in the movie that were accurate to the game. It didn't feel like "haha blocks, this is actually nothing like Minecraft". The plot was not a cinematic masterpiece or anything, but it was interesting enough. It wasn't a deep or complex plot, but it wasn't cringeworthy. It was related enough to the game. And sure, they added some things to make the plot that weren't in the game, but it wasn't anything outright ridiculous. I also thought the visual style did work out for the movie. I was very skeptical and would think it was out of place, but it really wasn't. Jack Black and Jason Momoa's dynamic in the movie was definitely the saving grace and honestly I think they carried the movie.
I definitely think the movie is not for everyone. If you haven't played Minecraft, you might not enjoy it as much.
