New Jersey is gearing up to Sue Discord for Protecting Pedophiles and Endangering Children

Very recently, the New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin filed a lawsuit against Discord, alleging that the platform has been continuously exposing children to violent and sexual content while also protecting predators. This is a direct violation of the state's consumer protection laws, and the platform has misled parents about how effective its safety measures are, along with how Discord does not have an effective age verifcation process since individuals under 13 can freely use the program due to these poor safeguards and potentially can get exposed to sexual predators. A copy of the complaint filed by NJ can be read here.

Around the same time to add icing to this cake, a popular Anti-Pedophile advocate who exposes and gets pedophiles banned from Roblox, Ruben Sim, had his discord bot, Ro-Cleaner which created a large database of servers where grooming is suspected to take place and allowed Discord server owners to ban members who are found on these servers was just banned from Discord since it was claimed to "profile" users and banned them for having "protected characteristics" despite no evidence existing to support this claim. This was not the case, and the bot is credited with cataloguing over 600,000 predatory individuals and protecting around 23,000 servers, which may now be at risk of future invasion by child predators. This ban essentially means that being in servers where grooming may take place is a "protected characteristic" and further shows how Discord is taking every measure possible to protect pedophiles.

Another, and potentially suspicious, happening after all of this is that the Discord CEO, Jason Citron, is stepping down and is being replaced by an individual who managed games by Activision Blizzard. This raises the question of the CEO stepping down to avoid accountability for the allegations by NJ or to potentially hide his "dirty laundry" from being aired out in the NJ lawsuit.

Not surprising in the slightest. People have known for years that Discord is a hotbed for child endangerment and pedophilia. It's why Discord moderators and admins have had the stereotype of being diddlers for literally half a decade at this point. Remember when Discord staff outright said they wouldn't ban people who posted cub porn (which is basically furry child porn), then backpedaled after receiving backlash for it? I do.

You may not be a big fan of Ruben Sim for a variety of reasons. I understand that, but I ask of you to put your dislike for him aside for just a moment, because this is much more than him. Ro-Cleaner represented a community's solution to a problem that the big companies have reacted to with an embittering indifference for far too long. The bot was actively tracking users who were part of Roblox "condo" communities (which are basically just sex games where degeneracy and grooming is rampant) and removing them from normal Roblox communities. It was incredibly effective when it was still around - according to Ruben within just 4 months over 600,000 accounts were being actively tracked and preventatively banned from over 23,000 Discord communities. Yet, it was still terminated with the claim that it discriminated against people based on "protected groups". The kicker? Discord took zero action against the condo communities in question. I am speechless.

I can't comment on whether or not the CEO resigning was coincidental or not, but I will note that Discord going public is definitely going to result in the platform's inevitable enshittification. Will we see history repeat itself with people switching over from Discord to a new platform? I personally hope so.

Speaking of which, Ruben has posted the Ro-Cleaner database to the general public in the form of an SQLite database and a spreadsheet on Google Drive. The database contains around 646,476 user IDs in total along with a list of every Discord server they were a part of. If the bot was banned after being mass-reported by people it was tracking, it seems their efforts have massively backfired, because now everyone knows who they are.
