Roblox is being sued by the Attorney General of Louisiana, alleging that the platform is knowingly facilitating child exploitation and knowingly intentionally failing to implement measures to protect children from predators and failing to inform parents and users of its dangers.
Roblox has historically had issues with predators and moderation in general. It took them years to take literally any action on an infamous predator who happened to be a content creator on the platform known as MisterObvious despite the advocacy of many at the time. There have been multiple cases as of recently of minors meeting predators online through Roblox and then either proceeding to get kidnapped and then raped by said predators or sexually extorted by said predators into doing even more embarassing/degenerate activities for their own enjoyment. Even today, there is an underground community on Roblox dedicated to erotic roleplay (known as condo games) and other similarly sexual creations where people are profiting in some way or another from allowing children to be groomed into unbelievable amounts of degeneracy.
Whenever people would bring this up to Roblox, their response was usually to just report them using the moderation system, which has been proven to be completely useless. As a result, certain people have had to take initiative to stop these predators themselves by any means necessary. One solution was to create a Discord bot to shitcan anyone found in condo-focused servers automatically to prevent them from joining innocent Roblox communities to spread their degeneracy like a disease, the outcome of which can be read about in my reply to another thread. Beware, it isn't a good ending. Another solution was to take initiative and work with law enforcement to catch predators and get them arrested, as popular YouTuber Schlep was doing.
Roblox recently decided to make the problem of predators on the platform go away. Did they finally listen to the community and implement better moderation or at least offer a direct line for one of the more well-known predator catchers to help clean up the platform? No. Roblox instead decided to ban every single account owned by Schlep and send a fucking Cease and Desist to him to stop him from creating future accounts and continue his work. That's right, they sent a legal threat to someone who was trying to get pedophiles arrested. Furthermore, Roblox decided then deter anyone else from trying to take Schlep's place by announcing that people who try to do what he did will be banned as well. They have since doubled down on this stance.
As a direct result of all this, Roblox is being sued by the Attorney General of Louisiana as mentioned above. I have attached the full lawsuit document, but you can access it along with the press release here as well. Discuss.
Louisiana Department of Justice Press Statement said:Today, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced legal action against Roblox, the #1 gaming site for children and teens.
The lawsuit, brought in the 21th Judicial District of Louisiana, shows that through its online gaming service, Roblox:
- Has and continues to facilitate the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana’s children.
- Knowingly and intentionally fails to implement basic safety controls to protect child users from predators.
- Knowingly and intentionally fails to provide notice to parents and child users of its dangers.
“Due to Roblox’s lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana. Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety. Every parent should be aware of the clear and present danger poised to their children by Roblox so they can prevent the unthinkable from ever happening in their own home,” said Attorney General Liz Murrill.
Roblox is an interactive online gaming platform launched in 2006 that facilitates “experiences” for users. It allows and encourages users to communicate with each other in real time.
There are nearly 82 million daily active users and more than 6.4 million experiences within the system.
The company reports:
Because there is no age minimum and requirement to verify age or parental permission once you sign-up, users can easily say they are younger or older than their actual age - allowing child predators to pose as children and for children to bypass any age requirement.
- 20% of users are under 9 years of age
- 20% are 9-12
- 16% are 13-16
- 44% are 17 years of age or older
Once registered, users have access to millions of games such as sports, role-playing, naval, fashion, and comedy. Other games which have existed on the platform including Escape to Epstein Island, Diddy Party, and Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe are not as innocent. These games and others are often filled with sexually explicit material and simulated sexual activity such as child gang rape.
A recent report even revealed a group of 3,334 members openly traded child pornography and solicited sexual acts from minors.
Just last month in Livingston Parish, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at the residence of an individual suspected of possessing child sexual abuse material. At the time of the arrest, the suspect was actively using the online platform Roblox. Notably, the individual was in possession of and had employed voice-altering technology designed to mimic the voice of a young female, allegedly for the purpose of luring and sexually exploiting minor users of the platform.
For these and other reasons, Roblox is in violation of Louisiana law. The State is seeking permanent injunctive relief and prohibiting them from:
Shares of Roblox Corp (RBLX) have more than doubled this year and have advanced over 115% year to date.
- Engaging in any activity in violation of Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act:
- Representing that Roblox has adequate safety features
- Restitution to the State of Louisiana
- Attorney’s fees
- All additional civil penalties allowable under law
- All additional damages allowable under law
